A translation engine that keeps the layout of technical manuals
Medical device user manuals must be delivered in Romanian with the original layout, tables and figures intact. We built a deterministic engine that translates PDFs in place, under strict quality gates.
In-place translation preserving layout, tables, images and internal links
Nine mandatory quality gates and visual verification on every page
Incremental rebuild roughly five times faster than the initial version
Context
Translating a technical manual of several hundred pages took weeks and produced documents where numbers, units and codes were lost or changed. Terminology had to follow the official register of medical device regulation.
What we did
We separated responsibilities strictly: a deterministic engine owns all text and the only write path is a verified translation dictionary. Language models decide structural grouping and terminology choices but never insert text directly. We added gates for legibility, minimum font size, untranslated text, overlaps and empty tables, a golden test set across eleven real deliverables, and provenance stamps on every shipped file.
Outcome
Reproducible deliverables with numbers and codes reinserted identically from the original, correct diacritics and compliant terminology. A real production defect was caught by the new gates before reaching the client.
